About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Not many hip-hop records have the ability to turn an entire industry on its ear. Just as Lauryn Hill's THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL and De La Soul's 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING ambitiously pushed the sound of hip-hop into new realms, LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE will force listeners to rethink how they listen to rap music. The title, lifted from the Laura Esquivel novel and the subsequent film, reflects the ever changing moods of one of hip-hop's most gifted MC's. From the comical ("A Film Called (PIMP)," featuring MC Lyte) to the spiritual (the stirring "Geto Heaven," featuring D'Angelo), Common's incorporation of live instrumentation provided by The Roots drummer ?uestlove and jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove -- both last heard shaping D'Angelo's VOODOO -- helps elevate hip-hop to a higher ground. The freestyle-sounding lead single, "The 6th Sense," showcases Common's fluid flow backed by a dense, DJ Premier beat that knocks harder than the NYPD. Meanwhile, Common's emotionally charged "A Song For Assata," featuring the Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo and activist Assata Shakur herself, beautifully conveys the tale of one woman's struggle for freedom over a sorrowful organ riff. If you're tired of endless verses about ice and gats, the sound of LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE is the sugar rush you've been waiting for. Rashaun Hall, Barnes & Noble

May 09, 2005: I love his work, rhymes that are so complex and not simple. My favorite track on here is Sixth Sense. I played this song plenty of times. I recommend you buy this CD; you won't regret it.

December 13, 2002: I really think that this was a very good album. The only thing that I thought was needed was a real party battle rap beat. He could have had one at least, but I still like the album, I like half of the album. I like the political and real rap that he protrays, the more I listen to him the more I like him. I wish I could rock some t's with his name on it.
