May 05, 2009: LIGHTS is a stage name for Canadian singer-songwriter Valerie Poxleitner. She is best known for composing and performing heavily synthesized dream pop music. She compose her own songs and she writes songs that are uplifting with a little techno/recho vibe to it. When she was 11, she started to write music when she learned three chords on the guitar. From then on she started using/learning the synthesizer and keytar. Valerie Poxleitner (Lights) was born in Timmins, Ontario. Lights is currently living in Toronto. Lights, at the age of 15, tried for a modeling casting held by Walmart. The modeling supervisor for these particular fliers noticed she had a guitar in her hand in her sample picture, and was wondering if she played. Of course, she did, and sang for them. Lights was first known to more audiences after her songs were featured in Old Navy springtime commercials. Lights indicated her primary influence as Björk. This influence can be heard somewhat in her synth-based pop music, though her music is overall much less complex, and perhaps happier and more optimistic than Bjork's hugely varied work. Lights has been compared to Vanessa Carlton for her high-toned, soft voice, and she has said she was a fan when she was younger. Lights is one of several new female singers coming to fore in the late 2000s. This list includes the likes of Kate Voegele, Katy Perry and Tristan Prettyman. All of them, Lights included, style themselves after the 1980s New Wave singers and 1990s feminist singer-songwriters. Behind the scenes, Lights has been hired to write songs and texts for the television series Instant Star, together with other skilled songwriters and musicians. They work as a team. Lights was credited with composing "Perfect", sung in the role of Jude Harrison on the show by Alexz Johnson. Lights has won many, many awards such as the Juno Award in Canada.
