Direct Source is known as a compilation label. It cross-licenses tracks from budget-priced but musically representative collections and reassembles them. Legends, featuring Kenny Rogers & the First Edition, is a case in point. These 22 cuts document some of the group's major hit singles as well as some well-placed album selections including "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town," "Something's Burning," and the fantastic "Reuben James." Also here are fine readings of "For the Good Times," "We All Got to Help Each Other," and "Me & Bobby McGee." There is one inexcusable omission, however: the the First Edition's first real smash, "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," which the late Mickey Newbury wrote for Rogers. Other than this, it's an excellent set. Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
