About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This is one of those rare discs that is a delight from beginning to end. Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená not only has a rich, focused, and characterful voice -- with a charming vibrato that recalls the legendary Conchita Supervia -- she is an expressive singer, too. The program offers mostly little-known gems. Serious opera lovers may know Mozart's late masterwork, La clemenza di Tito, but few are likely to have heard Gluck's version, not to mention Josef Myslivecek's L'Olympiade and Abramo ed Isacco. Myslivecek (1737-87) was a fine composer, and the arias here are true discoveries. Kozená sings them with tremendous ardor, as if she were determined to demonstrate their worth. The Prague Philharmonia is a top-notch ensemble, boasting tight ensemble and some fine soloists. Listen, for example, to Jindrich Pavlis's exquisite clarinet playing in Mozart's "Parto, ma tu, ben mio." To put it quite simply: This is a beautiful record in every way.
