Pianist Pinetop Perkins has first-class blues credentials, chief among them his longtime association with Muddy Waters. (Perkins replaced the illustrious Otis Spann in Waters's band.) Ladies Man finds the still-perky stylist alongside a bevy of female singers and instrumentalists including Deborah Coleman, Susan Tedeschi, Madeline Peyroux, Marcia Ball, Odetta, and Ruth Brown. The guests acquit themselves with honors, obviously delighted to be in the company of this living link to the classic Chicago blues era. Not to slight the featured male players who contribute to the success of the project: guitarists Jimmy Vivino and Elvin Bishop (on “How Long”) and drummer and harmonica player Willie “Big Eyes” Smith. Perkins himself delivers some good-natured vocals on a few tracks, including the Leiber and Stoller classic “Kansas City.” William Pearl, Barnes & Noble
