The Mouse goes Latin on this zesty little confection aimed at the elementary-school set -- not only are Disney characters referenced in these custom-tooled versions of recent radio hits, but the more salacious lyrical elements of Top 40 Latin pop are toned way down. "Livin' La Vida Mickey" and the new version of "Cup of Life" reshape Ricky Martin's monster 1999 hit singles. The venerable forebears of the new Latin sound also get their due: The Tito-Puente-by-way-of-early-Santana track "Oye Como Va" even duplicates Carlos Santana's fiery lead guitar lines, and the Latin standard "Guantanamera" turns up as well, although its chirpy arrangement belies its serious content (its Spanish lyrics were penned by Cuban hero José Martí prior to his execution). Notable here is the debut single from Walt Disney Records' brand-new teen artist, Myra, who proffers a spiced-up, vastly transformed version of Steppenwolf's psychedelic-era hit "Magic Carpet Ride." This is not to be confused with another album track called "Magic Carpet Ride," a completely different song by MDO, formerly known as Menudo. Probably the biggest draw here, though, is "Disney Mambo #5," redone by "Mambo #5"'s creator Lou Bega, and already a hit on Radio Disney. All told, LA VIDA MICKEY is muy divertido.
