About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet established their reputation in the classical realm, but they've never made their passion for pop a secret. In their previous Telarc recording, LAGQ Latin, for instance, they put together a heady mix that took in Bizet's Carmen as well as a hit tune by Sting. And now, on Guitar Heroes, they leave the classics completely behind. As its title suggests, this album pays tribute to the artists who inspired the foursome in their formative years, and the result, not surprisingly, spans virtually the entire pop-music spectrum, from the urbane jazziness of Django Reinhardt's "Gypsy Flower" to the bluegrass twang of Norman Blake and David Bromberg's "B&B," and from the edgy virtuosity of Jimi Hendrix's "Pluck, Strum, and Hammer" to the weird charm of Frank Zappa's "Let's Be Frank." What's so special about the arrangements here is that they respect the originals while maintaining a unified style. And, this being the LAGQ (who put a premium on innovation), there's something new, as well: a folksy, melancholy number by quartet member Andrew York. Telarc's engineers have captured the intricate texture of the four guitars with breathtaking clarity and presence. An ear-opening program. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
