More than any other instrument, the guitar represents the intersection of several different musical styles. It has its own rich classical tradition; its use in Spanish traditional music has influenced a whole host of classical composers who never wrote a note for the instrument; and, of course, it is the primary expressive vehicle for pop and folk musicians. This album by the virtuoso Los Angeles Guitar Quartet explores the instrument's stylistic boundaries and stakes out a wide and varied landscape -- from an arrangement of Sting's "Fragile" to the Afro-Cuban rhythms of Eduardo Martín's "Hasta Alicia Baila" to the sultry steps of Astor Piazzolla's "Fuga y Misterio" to a suite from Bizet's opera Carmen. But despite the diversity encompassed here, the program hangs together well, thanks in large part to the vital and sophisticated performances by the Quartet.
