This is Cole Porter's best complete work and the rivial update is fantastic. The orchestrations have been revised to feature more brass and fewer strings and the score is much the better for it. Now we have that jazzy, bouncy feel to the score Porter's music is known for. Paul Gemingani is a masterful musician and conductor and the recorded sound is of very high quality. He makes prudent cuts in the extensive dance breaks (I've directed this version of the show) without losing the musical and dramatic integrity of the work as a whole. The performances here are top notch. Brian Stokes Mitchell's handsome baritone encompasses Porter's quintessential leading man Fred/Petrucio wonderfully. Marin Mazzie sets the bar very high with her portrayal of Lilli/Kate and it is such a joy to hear this music sung and not yelled as is the fashion of so many musicals today. Amy Spanger is a breath of fresh air as Lois/Bianca as is Michael Beresse as Bill/Lucentio. Compared to the DVD of the London cast with Brent Barret and Rachel York...well, it depends on what you like. Rachel York uses much more of her chest voice to sing the role, particularly "So in Love," which not everyone (like myself) will like. Brent Barret's voice is much lighter and tenory than Brian Stokes Mitchell's, his high notes come easier and last longer, but he lacks the richness of tone that I feel is so essential to the thoroghly masculine character of Petruchio. I own the DVD and the CD, and if you are a fan of the show, I recommend you purchase both, for each is wonderful. The bottom line is this is a fantastic recording of a truly magnificent piece and I am thankful there is a record of this wonderful performance.

I wish Kate was still on Broadway! I saw it three times. I played Bianca in my LVR High School production and loved every aspect of the show! Cole Porter was a genius when it came to dynamic lyrics and a smashing score! The music is fabulous-you won't be able to stop singing the tunes! The Bard would be very proud!!!
