Special Features:

Watch a video about the making of Kind of Blue

  • Disc One features the original album in its entirety with the "Flamenco Sketches" alternate take, the rare "Freddie Freeloader" false start, and a selection of in-the-studio dialog from the original sessions.
  • Disc Two presents the very first session by the classic Miles Davis sextet (May 26, 1958, with Adderley, Coltrane, Evans, Chambers and Cobb), as well as studio material -- "On Green Dolphin Street," "Fran-Dance," "Stella By Starlight," "Love For Sale" -- previously available only on the Grammy-winning Davis and Coltrane boxed set, The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961. Also included on Disc Two is the first authorized release of two extended live performances: "So What" from the April 9, 1960 Den Haag Concert featuring Miles, Coltrane, Kelly, Chambers and Cobb; and "All Blues" from the April 8, 1960 Zurich Concert (featuring the same band).
  • Disc Three is a DVD including an in-depth documentary illuminating the story behind Kind of Blue and the historic April 2, 1959 television program Robert Herridge Theater: The Sound of Miles Davis, starring Davis and Coltrane.
  • This deluxe Collector's Edition also includes a vinyl LP copy of Kind of Blue, a poster, and an LP-sized 60-page hardbound book.

    Editorial Reviews

Kind of Blue isn't merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it's an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album, a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps because this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of "So What." From that moment on, the record never really changes pace -- each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. It's the pinnacle of modal jazz -- tonality and solos build from the overall key, not chord changes, giving the music a subtly shifting quality. All of this doesn't quite explain why seasoned jazz fans return to this record even after they've memorized every nuance. They return because this is an exceptional band -- Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb -- one of the greatest in history, playing at the peak of its power. As Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled, and then the band improvised. The end results were wondrous and still crackle with vitality. Kind of Blue works on many different levels. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don't like Kind of Blue, you don't like jazz -- but it's hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection. [Legacy's greatly expanded 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition was issued in 2008.] Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

May 16, 2009: Having grown up in a Southern family, jazz wuz not part of our regular music going experience. Howeva, KIND OF BLUE should n will turn any non-jazz fan into one. It has everything and one can feel the smoke of cigars and cigarettes and glass clinking with scotch listening to this album.

February 11, 2009: The music reads like a thesis on jazz, race relations, and the symbiotic relationship among kindred souls. After listening to this collection, I understood the musicians, their travails, and their protest to an unjust, yet limitless world. Closing my eyes as the music played, I felt what Fats Waller proclaimed in "Black and Blue" and what Louis Armstong meant with his "What a Wonderful World." The collection successfully aims at reconciling so many contradictions about identity, class, and opportunities in America. Moreover, American genius W.E.B. DuBois would have easily recognized and understood the double consciousness of all these men. Ah, to listen to this music is to understand the genius of marginalized folks and their contribution to the musical literature of the world.
