This Boston-based trio might well be the mellowest party band in rock history, what with their emphasis on acoustic guitar and simple hand percussion -- not to mention an exceedingly sunny disposition. With their second major-label release, Guster have amped up their typically laid-back approach, expanding the sonic palette and turning the volume up -- on occasion -- to wake-the-neighbors level. That's most obvious on songs like "Red Oyster Cult," a surreal layering of falsetto vocals and staccato rhythms (for which percussionist Brian Rosenworcel actually employs a full kit, sticks and all). Likewise, "Come Downstairs and Say Hello" unskeins in loopy circles, demonstrating a chummy looseness that's reminiscent of Yo La Tengo's mellower side. As ever, Ryan Miller and Adam Gardner throw in plenty of wink-and-a-nod vocal tricks -- particularly on the bluegrass-flavored "Jesus on the Radio" and the winsome "Ramona" (which made an earlier appearance on MTV2 Handpicked, Vol. 2). Not all of the digressions work out perfectly; for example, the synthesizer coating of "Homecoming King" rings a bit hollow, in light of the band's organic rooting. Still, given the surplus of memorable melodies and relatable tales -- "Amsterdam" sticks in the head long after the disc is back on the shelf -- Keep It Together is a natural high. October 14, 2004: For those whom have never heard of the band "Guster," you are in for a treat. With their second major-label record deal, the original Tufts University band is on its way up. Their newest album, Keep It Together, is perhaps a little something out of the norm for Guster. Transitioning from a more mellow beat and happy-go-lucky type lyrics, the latest release features a set of songs ranging in style with a subconscious influence on nostalgia and even a little bit of rocking out—minus electric guitars. Originally named “Gus,” the trio began recording songs with a lighthearted beat and old fashioned acoustic guitar with avid bongo drum beats in the background. Over the years Guster has matured their music by incorporating a melodious mix of pleasant beats, shifting rhythms, and amusing vocal mixes between acapella and studio while still maintaining their original harmonic roots. All of these new developments have been compiled into a single album that you won’t be able to take out of your CD player. The album won’t make you want to cry, and it certainly won’t make you want to hit someone, but more importantly Guster’s newest compilation subconsciously entices your senses and intrigues your musical preference that will leave you wanting more. This band has been, and hopefully always will be, a special group with great talent, known to few, with a personable stage presence and incredible mixing techniques of acoustic guitar and hand percussion. Until you put this CD on, you can’t fully appreciate the quality of Guster nor can you understand the love for them. Keep It Together will fulfill all of your musical needs. Whether your mood is sad, happy, mellow, or upbeat, this album will do it for you.

December 06, 2003: There isn't much I could say about Guster other than they are excellent. I just saw Guster in concert for the 2nd time last night at the State Theatre, in Detroit. I guarentee you that you will not listen to a Guster record or visit a Guster concert and not feel better about yourself. Adam, Ryan and Brian, AKA the Thundergod deliver excellent performances especially on Keep it Together. Keep it Together is their 4th album and they defintely get better and better as they go on. The track "I Hope Tomorrow is Like Today" features vocals from Ben Kweller, another outstanding artist. I strongly reccomend that you listen to Keep it Together or any Guster album.
