About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Hockey Night's second full-length Keep Guessin' trades the willy-nilly eclecticism of their earlier work for a mix of classic rock riffs and snotty indie rock charm. Songs like "For Guys' Eyes Only" have appealingly shambling melodies and guitar work that sounds like the Allman Brothers' catalog as played by Stephen Malkmus. Indeed, Pavement (whose own fusion of the Fall and CCR provided the template for this kind of approach) is a big influence on Keep Guessin' -- "Sunset Eyes"' languid, multi-part melody and Mellotron flourishes make it sound like a Brighten the Corners outtake, and Paul Sprangers' nasal vocals and elliptical lyrics are also heavily indebted to the indie rock legends. While nothing on Keep Guessin' sounds especially new, the album has its share of nice moments, such as the tumbling riffs and vocal harmonies on "Saturday Night Gallop," the epic ebb and flow of "This Peaceful Year," and the sprawling-yet-dense rock of "Grimbreak." Hockey Night's tried-and-true sound probably won't appeal to those who think indie rock should always break new ground, but Keep Guessin' ends up being a pretty charming spin on classic rock from the '70s and the '90s.
