June 08, 2003: There’s not a song on either of these two discs that I don’t like. But then again, when a company like Green Linnet chooses its favorite and most-requested tracks from over 20 years of production, the resulting collection is bound to be great! Featured here are: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Cherish the Ladies, Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny, Altan, Niamh Parsons and the Loose Connections, Patrick Street, Liz Carroll, Capercaillie, Eileen Ivers, Deanta, Relativity, John Whelan, Seamus Egan, The Tannahill Weavers, Celtic Fiddle Festival, Relativity, Silly Wizard, Jerry O’Sullivan, Joanie Madden, Tommy Sands, Phil Cunningham, Kevin Burke and Dick Gaughan. The first CD is mostly high-energy pieces, while the second contains a few more laments. There are too many old favorites of mine on here to list, but a few new finds that struck me were Eileen Ivers’ “Pachelbel’s Frolics” (a nice twist!), Patrick Street’s hilarious story-song of the same name, Tommy Sands timely ballad “There Were Roses”, and the work of Joanie Madden on her “Hyness’s March set,” which is nothing short of virtuosic. When it comes to great Celtic music, it would be hard to find a better value for your dollar than this 26 track compilation! (Unless, of course, you happened upon “Green Linnet Records: The 20th Anniversary Collection”, another great 2-CD set.)
