[Total Eclipse] is a sonically sophisticated work, which plays freely with the differences between modern and period instruments. The stunning opening, a raucous and violent saxophone solo (a kind of "extreme sax" that threatens at every moment to shriek into a state of incomprehensibility), is brilliantly played by John Harle against an orchestral drone with timpani. This texture alternates with lyric vocal and choral sections in a static block construction. Johanna Keller, New York Times
