Editorial Reviews

Ten Jimmy Dorsey performances, from live radio broadcasts covering a decade, all instrumental and all superb, including the sound. There's probably a group of Hindsight releases that has performances of each of these, but this disc has some advantages -- it's pretty much all swinging, no pop material to break the mood or show Dorsey and company compromising their abilities, and the choice of tracks is above average as well, almost all stuff where the band really opened up, playing some pretty hot dance music for the era; and where they're not hot, they're always sharp. "Contrasts," "Carolina In the Morning," "Blue Lou," "All the Things You Ain't," "Let's Fall In Love," "Sweet Lorraine," "Perfida," and "Grand Central Getaway" (with its proto-bop elements) are the highlights of an excellent budget collection. The sound quality is also first-rate, matching the best studio work of the period, and there's a decent set of notes for a change on an inexpensive release like this. The only thing lacking is credits for the band members. Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
