About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

On the third installment in his hip-hop/jazz-fusion series Jazzmatazz, Gang Starr frontman Guru (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) broadens his scope to embrace R&B and soul. Thus the aptly named Streetsoul features fluid guest shots from soulsters Angie Stone on the sassy "Keep Your Worries"; Amel Larrieux on "Guidance," a dedication to Guru's son that borrows its melody from Earth, Wind, & Fire's "Keep Your Head to the Sky"; and Erykah Badu on the jazzy, improvised "Plenty." Although Streetsoul finds Guru collaborating primarily with female artists (Macy Gray, Les Nubians, and Kelis are also featured), he does his share of male bonding with the Roots on the sparse "Lift Your Fist," Donell Jones on the message-oriented "Hustlin' Daze," and D'Angelo sound-alike Bilal on the funky "Certified." With his Jazzmatazz projects, Guru seeks not only to bridge the gap between hip-hop and other styles of black music, but also to narrow the age gap between new-school visionaries and old-school pioneers such as the masterful Isaac Hayes and jazz music legend Herbie Hancock, who appear on "Night Vision" and "Timeless," respectively. Thanks to Guru and friends, hip-hop, like jazz, continues its development as a progressive, original, American music form. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble

April 02, 2001: Not quite up to the standards of the two previous Jazzmatazz offerings(especially the second) but still an enjoyable listen. One of the more slept on albums of the year(as is the entire series). The r&b artists(Erykah Badu, Bilal, Angie Stone, and others) are what give the album its life force.
