The Bach "Sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord" have been adopted by modern cellists as their own. While the cello certainly is a logical choice for a modern successor, and its sound is an appropriate approximation of the viola da gamba, it's still gratifying to hear these works on original instruments. Mikko Perkola's sound is warm and appropriately soft around the edges. Ornaments are well placed and clear, and his intricate use of the bow provides additional ornamentation in and of itself. Harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen does a superb job of matching temperament, articulation, and phrasing throughout. The only potential downside to this recording of the three sonatas is in the area of tempo selection. While the slow movements are well paced and reserved, the fast movements are also rather slow, yielding very little difference in character between the movements. Also on this album are two trios, originally for organ, that have been reworked for viola da gamba and harpsichord. While these works are enjoyable, they are not in the same league with the three sonatas. Häkkinen also performs the two "Keyboard Sonatas, BWV 963" and "967." Tempos in "963" are pleasantly more varied. All around, though, this album is thoroughly enjoyable and an excellent choice for anyone seeking a recording of the sonatas performed on the instruments for which they were intended.
