About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Don't let the 28 tracks fool you; Collectables doesn't attempt a thorough overview of Ivory Joe Hunter's five-decade recording career, which spanned from the '30s to the '70s. These 28 tracks chronicle the Texas-born purveyor of West Coast blues' '50s stint with Atlantic Records. For some artists it can be done, but trying to cover Hunter's output in less than 30 songs is as impossible as covering a king-size mattress with a twin-size sheet. Hunter preceded dinosaurs like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, the Andrews Sisters, Vic Damone, and the Isley Brothers. This disc features Hunter's two late-'50s Atlantic albums, the period of "Since I Lost My Baby (I Almost Lost My Mind)," the hit that made Hunter the oldest performer on the rock circuit. He matches that velvety offering with other smoothies. Ivory Joe Hunter was a stylish blues crooner who influenced countless singers with his low-key approach. Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
