About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Driven by Pete Townshend's arching musical ambitions, It's Hard was a final effort from the Who. Featuring layers of synthesizers and long-winded, twisting song structures, the album featured the anthemic "Athena" and the terse "Eminence Front." [The compact disc reissue adds four bonus tracks to the original 12-song lineup, all of them live. These alternate versions of "Eminence Front," the title song, and "Cry If You Want," along with John Entwistle's "Dangerous," all come from performances at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. Although no specific recording dates are given in the booklet, these bonus tracks offer far more lively versions of these songs than their original studio counterparts.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Cub Koda, All Music Guide All Music Guide

Underrated Whoby grg

April 02, 2009: Athena, Eminence Front, and I've Known No War are some of my favorite Who songs. I've Known No War in particular holds its own, for me, with Baba O'Riley. Cooks County, Cry if You Want, and It's Hard are also standout. One Life's Enough is a delicate, masterful little interlude. This is a good Who album. Not just for diehards.

May 14, 2005: The Who was a very brilliant band. They gave us masterpieces in the 60's and 70's, but when the 80's came, we kind of lost them. "It's Hard", being the last studio album by the band, is also known as their worst album, but I don't think it's too bad. After actually hearing the album, I've discovered that "Eminence Front", the album's only hit, is also the most unique song on the album. Almost everything else on the album sounds a lot like the band's early mid-60's stuff (for instance, the title track). This was a very unusual album for the decade as it didn't have much of that 80's feel to it. In addition, the album runs at 49 minutes, which is unusually long for a year like this. Needless to say, the album is very strange, but it's reasonable for die-hard fans.
