About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The big news on the release of his eighth album was that Lenny Kravitz was still celibate. Fans might wonder just what kind of love revolution he feels it is time for, but from the opening clangor of title track, it's obvious that Lenny hasn't been laid in years. A deep-in-the-pants itch animates the gritty guitar rockers ("Bring It On") and the sleazy hip-shakers ("Dancin' Til Dawn") alike. It also accounts for the distracted nature of the string-laden ballads, which relay messages more commonly scratched into loose-leaf binders by daydreaming teens. You don't come to Lenny's house for depth, though. It's the surfaces that count, from his lastingly handsome mug and expensive clothes to the exquisitely re-created '70s guitar fuzz. Of a piece with his previous disc, Baptism, and his now 20-year-old debut, It Is Time… is largely a one-man-band affair, with Lenny on guitars, drums, bass, and organ, with occasional guitar and horn solos. The spartan aesthetic showcases how timeless the music of Lenny Kravitz is -- no longer as derivative or anachronistic as it appeared in the late '90s, it wears like blue jeans. Expensive, designer blue jeans, but funky nonetheless. Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble
