Editorial Reviews
After 25 years of being an important part of the rhythm sections of groups led by Elvin Jones, Billy Taylor, and others, bassist Chip Jackson contributes a valuable CD as a leader. Divided into a trio session with pianist Dave Kikoski and drummer Billy Hart, and duos with pianist Larry Willis, Jackson's fat tone and creative approach to his instrument mean there's no dull moments as is too often the case when many bass players lead a date. The title track is an original that not only shows off Jackson's tremendous chops but gives his sidemen a chance to groove; while a particularly percussive "Epistrophy" is also very fresh. "Four Brothers" makes for a lively duet so the lack of horns is no problem, and his work with Willis during "In A Sentimental Mood" shows he took Ellington's advice about not playing too many notes to spoil the mood of this timeless ballad. Hopefully, Jackson won't have to wait another quarter century to lead his next session. Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
