About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Over the course of her long and celebrated career, Carly Simon has periodically delved into the classics, first with 1981's Torch and then with the admirable trilogy of jazz pop standards encompassing 1990's My Romance, 1997's Film Noir, and 2005's Moonlight Serenade. With Into White, however, Simon turns her attention -- and her considerable interpretive skills -- in a different direction. It's a collection of lullabies and seemingly simple tunes -- some new but many deeply familiar -- that Simon treats with care and gentle wisdom. Billed as "soothing songs for the young and the young at heart," Into White is quiet and spacious, full of brief songs played softly, with the focus always on Simon's intimate alto. "Blackbird" floats amid acoustic guitars and a slide guitar before billowing slightly with strings; "You Are My Sunshine" moves slowly to a few scattered piano chords; "Devoted to You" becomes a mother's pledge to her child -- it rocks like a cradle, all the more so when it joins with "All I Have to Do Is Dream." It's only fitting that Simon's own children, Ben and Sally Taylor, contribute, sitting in on their father's "You Can Close Your Eyes." Familial and familiar, Into White impresses with understatement. March 14, 2007: Okay maybe I made a mistake when I listened to this the first time in my car. It's a quiet lullaby album that could literally put you to sleep. Not what I expected. Parts are lovely, others gratingly irritating. Too many la-la-la s instead of lyrics (do you remember the part on Name That Tune when the singer would la-la-la the songs and the contestants would have to guess?) I've always been a huge Carly Simon fan and she never fails to surprise. You may find the surprise delightful or disappointing.
