Editorial Reviews

The ninth entry in the International Deejay Gigolos series finds DJ Hell putting together yet another solid two-disc set of club tracks, most of them previously unreleased and a good number of the remainder never before issued on CD. How excited you get about this will depend very much on your attitude toward house-oriented European club music, specifically of the deadpan Teutonic sort. While the beats are consistently strong, the vocals keep lapsing back into a sort of affect-free listlessness, whether it's Miss Kittin's rather hilariously toneless repetitions of "I just can't get enough" (on "1982"), or Xlover's equally blasé delivery of phrases like "Won't you play with me tonight" and "Toilet sex." There's more subtlety at work on Digitaria's "Teen Years," during which a computer-generated voice intones emotionally raw phrases like "I miss your laughter" and "I have to remember what I felt in my teen years." It's funny at first, but then it becomes kind of sobering. That kind of complexity is more the exception than the rule, of course: the rest of the program veers from generic thumpa-thumpa instrumentals (Jor-El's "Fade Away," Bodzin & Huntemann's "Black Ice") to more interesting songs by the likes of Grace Jones and -- believe it or not -- Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft. Skip over the mean-spirited "Good Sluts Factory" by Kiko & Gino's and the completely unlistenable "Acidbox" by Saturn V, and you've still got more than your money's worth.
