Editorial Reviews

It's a little quirky for Raven to have combined Natalie Cole's first and third LPs on this single-disc CD compilation, when many would feel a more strictly chronological approach -- i.e., combining her first two LPs -- would have been more logical. The reason may be that this marks the first time Unpredictable (according to this reissue's packaging) has ever been on CD -- a pretty unbelievable situation, considering the record made the pop Top Ten when it was first issued in 1977. Whether you're hungering for a CD version of Unpredictable or just a lot of early Natalie Cole, it still makes for a pretty good deal, with 20 tracks and good liner notes, though it's not a complete survey of her earliest recordings by any means. The debut Inseparable remains the record that will likely remain her most popular, especially due to the inclusion of her first hit, "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)." Unpredictable isn't exactly itself unpredictable, but pretty much more of the same -- accomplished soul that bore considerably stronger links to the music's origins than much R&B music of the late '70s, even as there were nods to contemporary disco production and the burgeoning quiet storm genre.
