Editorial Reviews

A greatest-hits album of sorts from Jose Luis Rodriguez, a particularly busy and surprisingly versatile Venezuelan singer. The bulk of the album is taken up with romantic ballads, as the title (Unforgettable) might suggest. There are hints of tango, samba, and mariachi as well, however. Throughout the album, it would seem that Rodriguez is making use of a number of Brazilian aesthetics, most notably through his phrasing. At the same time, his voice remains in more of a Mexican/Venezuelan mode, which doesn't mesh with the smooth phrasing of a samba quite so well. Backing band Los Panchos threaten to steal the show from time to time during their short instrumental interludes. Arguably one of the better Rodriguez albums and certainly worth a listen, but first-timers may want to opt for Inolvidable (the prior compilation) first. Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide
