About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This project by the powerful pianist McCoy Tyner is a bit unusual in that he is featured with an all-star rhythm section (guitarist Earl Klugh, bassist Ron Carter, and either Jack DeJohnette or Eric Gravatt on drums), a horn section (which includes a few solos for trumpeter Jon Faddis, tenor saxophonist Alex Foster, and trombonist Charles Stephens), and seven voices. Tyner was responsible not only for the five originals but the arrangements, too. In reality, the voices were not needed (they stick out as a bit of a frivolity), but Tyner plays as strong as usual; he has yet to record an uninspired solo. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

June 15, 2000: I am not a Native American, though I emensely enjoy listening to Native American Music, and have a considerable collection. Each work has its own merit, but none has come near to the truth and expression from the depth of the heart of a people, as does this offering. Carlos Nakai has traveled down many a musical path, exploring his gifts for what he can know and communicate. He continues to broaden his musical vision and ventures, as well as his audience. Though he always remains true to the spirit of the music of his people, I have never heard any Native American music that speaks to my heart in such clear and open ways as Inner Voices. My spirit is moved each time I hear it, and it tells me of a people who have known life and the earth in ways I can only imagine. It is both mournful, as a clear sense of deep suffering is felt, and beautiful, as one forgives and is overcome by peace. The dialogue of the flute with the other instruments is very effective! I buy new additions to my collection all the time, but I have heard nothing that comes close to this. Thank you, Carlos Nakai, for this unique and beautiful gift of the spirit. No words could convey the truths you have told here with your vision and your instruments.
