Editorial Reviews

Although they like to call their style "extreme power metal", in actuality Dragonforce are an honest to goodness prog metal band. If you were to mix the lyrics/subject matter of Dio, the guitar work of Yngwie Malmsteen and Iron Maiden (shredding and twin-guitar harmonies, respectively), impeccable double bass thrash metal drumming, and the vocals of Helloween into one high-calorie metallic cocktail, you'd get Dragonforce. Hailing from London (do all prog metal bands come from Europe?), the quintet sticks to the game plan laid out on its first two releases, as evidenced by 2006's Inhuman Rampage. Admittedly, this sort of genre is certainly not for everyone -- some would say it goes beyond parody -- while some of the song titles sound like rejects from a high-school battle of the bands contest ("Revolution Deathsquad," "Operation Ground and Pound," etc.). But for those who regard technique over tunefulness, Inhuman Rampage should be a worthy listen. And here's a challenge for budding prog metallists everywhere -- it may be impossible to play your instrument as technically precise as these lads from London do on "Storming the Burning Fields." A fine soundtrack while playing your next level of World of Warcraft. [The 2007 CD/DVD edition includes two music videos, a band documentary, and one live performance.] Greg Prato, All Music Guide

October 28, 2007: Lead guitarist Herman Li says that he never bothered to take music lessons or even learn to read music, but he is one of the hottest shredders on the planet. Although the lyrics are juvenile and the material sounds like a soundtrack to a murderous video game, these guys from London can really play. If you like bands like Pantera, these guys will blow you away with their incendiary guitar riffs, blazing speed and incredible technical precision, but after a while all the songs sound the same and the music becomes a bit tedious. They lack the compositional talent of a more mature and intelligent band like Dream theater, or the emotion and melodic genius of Joe Satriani, but if you like the death metal/extreme metal genre, you will love this album. They have really improved since their last effort, and if they can write some more interesting material, and maybe throw in a few ballads or slow songs to vary the style a bit their next album might get the attention these talented musicians deserve.
