About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

With Indian Summer, Carbon Leaf takes the leap from "America's preeminent unsigned band" to a member of Vanguard Records' roster. Hailing from Richmond, VA, vocalist Barry Privett, multi-instrumentalist Carter Gravatt, bassist Jordan Medas, drummer Scott Milstead, and guitarist Terry Clark concoct a solid pop/rock sound filled with lots of acoustic and electric guitars and good harmony. The opener, "Life Less Ordinary," reveals that despite Carbon Leaf's D.I.Y. background, the band is quite capable of making radio-friendly tracks. Even with a large arsenal of non-pop/rock instruments -- mandolin, lap steel, and bouzouki -- the overall blend works in accord with the vocals on catchy tracks like "What About Everything?" and "Raise the Roof." The instrumental firepower also gives the band and producer John Morand lots of elasticity in matching the arrangement to the mood of each song. There's the nice acoustic underpinning of "Let Your Troubles Roll By," the heavy guitar work on the bridge of "Changeless," the guitar runs and steady backbeat of "This Is My Song!," and the heavy bass that anchors "Grey Sky Eyes." Of course, none of this would work so well without good vocals, and Carbon Leaf is blessed with more than one good singer. A solid entry into the mainstream, Indian Summer seems to promise more good things from Carbon Leaf. Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., All Music Guide

July 26, 2004: What can I say, they have out-done themselves again. Just when you think there could never exist an album that shines more than Echo Echo (another really great cd by the same band), here they come with Indian Summer. After listening to the cd once, I had to immediately listen to it again! It's just that great. They have amazing talent. This album is a little more mellow than the previous ones, but it's just as good. This is an album I love to sing along with! 'What about Everything?' is a great song, I've loved it since I first heard it sung at the 930 Club in D.C. 'Raise the Roof' is another great song about life...and living it. One of my favorite songs is 'When I'm Alone'. It has a great melody change in the song, just one of many surprises the band has supplied. Many many wishes for great record sales with this cd! I love it!

July 13, 2004: What else is there to say about Carbon Leaf except that their new album “Indian Summer” rocks! With two guitarist, a bassist, and drummer it’s just the right mix for a mellow but uplifting beat, and with songs like Raise the Roof who can resist not to be addicted to the new sound that Carbon Leaf has created! And trust me if you like Crash Test Dummies or Eve 6 you are bound to fall in love with Carbon Leaf! Even though I like the whole album I do have my favorites such as “Life Less Ordinary” talks about loving someone and wanting to do anything to keep them around in your life. With a beat that is like a roller coaster that reaches a climax and than falls back down this song is bound to be played on the top ten. Then, there’s the song “What about Everything” that discusses questions that go unanswered in life and if or how they will ever get answered. The lyrics are song with a melody of questionability and certainty. And last but not least the song Raise the Roof like I mentioned above if you like Eve 6 you’ll love this song it talks about doing everything you can to get to a higher ground in life with a chorus that almost fallows the same beat as Eve 6’s “Here’s to the Night.”
