The Peter Hammill reissues undertaken by Virgin in the U.K during 2006 have been glorious. For starters, Hammill does the remastering himself and chooses the bonus tracks as well -- he is the series coordinator and producer, so the same lovely excess that went into these recordings in the first place is felt and realized by the artist. Hammill also writes the liner essays in them. On In Camera, he begins innocently enough by stating: "With every album I tried to do something new and to learn something." That's certainly the case here, following Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night. In Camera is one of Hammill's most apocalyptic works -- literally in the pairing of the tunes "Gog" and "Magog." ("Gog" has a typo omission here and is listed as "Go.") The musique concrète approaches to some of these tunes is rather startling, especially in that there are polar opposites to be found here as well; just listen to "Again." In addition to the stellar sound, Hammill's choice of bonus material is fantastic: there are performances of "The Emperor in His War Room," "Faint Heart and the Sermon," and "(No More) The Sub Mariner." For those Pawn Hearts who are faithful, these reissues are not only sanctioned by the artist -- they have been re-created by him. Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
