Editorial Reviews

Half a century or so ago, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf recorded an album of operetta arias -- one of the most delightful vocal recitals on disc. Now here's another silvery voiced soprano, Barbara Bonney, taking on many of the same sugary, Viennese confections by Benatzky, Lehár, Stoltz, Johann Strauss, and others. The American singer does not always lilt as idiomatically as her German counterpart, and although pianist Ronald Schneider is a sensitive and fleet-fingered partner, one misses the glitter and glow of the orchestral originals. Bonney's luminous tone is ravishing, however, and she caresses the music's graceful phrases with a warm tenderness that goes straight to one's heart. And she is careful not to let the sweetness get cloying, applying elegant restraint where needed. Only time will tell whether this recital album will become a classic like Schwarzkopf's. Be warned, though, that this is addictive stuff; once in your CD player, it's likely to remain there for weeks at a time. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
