Editorial Reviews

For many, the easiest introduction to Iannis Xenakis may be found in his compositions for percussion rather than through study of his early stochastic works for orchestra or daunting theatrical pieces. Such dynamic, virtuosic works as "Okho for three djembes" (1989) or "Rebonds A and B" (1987-1989) and "Psappha for solo percussion" (1975) have a direct presentation, clear timbral focus, and immediate rhythmic appeal; and these pieces adequately orient the listener to the complex character of Xenakis' music, without the added burden of comprehending the elaborate pitch structures, sharp-edged sonorities, and overwhelming forces of his larger-scale compositions. Pedro Carneiro turns in compellingly dramatic performances of the two "Rebonds," played in reverse order here, and acquits himself admirably in his rapid instrumental choices for the quasi-improvisational and densely notated "Psappha." But the performance of "Okho" on African drums by Carneiro, Mathew Rich, and Stephen John Gibson is mesmerizing in its steadiness and controlled energy, and this is clearly the first choice for anyone seeking accessible Xenakis. This combined CD/DVD also provides fascinating close-up color footage of Carneiro's performance of "Rebonds B," and production interviews in French with English subtitles. Zig Zag's sound quality is terrific. Blair Sanderson, All Music Guide
