About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

For a producer-rapper to release a new disc nearly every third year, he'd have to possess a secret to longevity that many in the hip-hop game would kill for. A few, like De La Soul, get away with it. This year, an unlikely Warren G holds the golden goose. His third disc, I WANT IT ALL comes after his 1997 second album TAKE A LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULDER (REALITY) and 1994's multi-platinum debut REGULATE…THE G-FUNK ERA put G-Funk's warbling keyboards and menacing but smooth R&B grooves on the map. But much has changed since Warren's last G-Funk installment. No longer with Def Jam, Warren heads his own Restless Records imprint, the G-Funk New Millennium 2000 label. To ensure his chances of platinum-plus success, he's enlisted rap's hottest lyricists -- Jermaine Dupri, Eve, Memphis Bleek, Slick Rick, Crucial Conflict -- to versify atop his formulaic if not, slinky beats. He also gets assists from his "Wesside potnahs," with Nate Dogg providing steady harmony, Snoop Dogg delivering the ice-cold flow. On "Gangsta Love," sinewy keyboards and Nate's strident vocals support a mellow vibe. The title track features Mack 10 and samples the horns from Debarge's "I Like It" for Warren's new found, paper-chasing business strategy. With so many chefs in the kitchen, only "We Got That" with its East Coast thug boasts from Eve and Drag-on of the Ruff Ryders camp, distracts from the disc's otherwise breezy, lush orchestrations. Warren proves again there's still a place for his soul-drenched blend and lazy flow, signaling a triumphant return for rap's golden boy. Brett Johnson, Barnes & Noble
