At its heart, Christian music is a genre distinguished by impassioned statements of faith that defy musical boundaries. Unlike the vogue for derivative "worship" music, real Christian songs are full of conviction and emotional resonance because they are based on real experience. The best examples of these musical faith statements have been captured in a two-CD set, I Can Only Imagine: Ultimate Power Anthems of the Christian Faith. The collection unites crossover smashes (MercyMe's "I Can Only Imagine," Bob Carlisle's "Butterfly Kisses," and Michael W. Smith's "Place in This World") with treasures adored by Christian audiences (Amy Grant's "Thy Word," Point of Grace's "I'll Be Believing," and Sara Groves's "The Word," to name a few). A diverse array of artists are represented as well: In addition to contemporary hit-makers, there are veterans such as Sandi Patty, Dallas Holm & Praise, and the Imperials-yes, even modern worship leaders Darlene Zschech and Paul Baloche. Imagine reminds us all of how good real Christian music can be. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
