The most magical recording of Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel" has just been reissued: a 1953 EMI recording that captured more of the wonder and wide-eyed innocence of this best-loved children's opera than any other performance ever has, or probably ever will. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Elisabeth Grümmer are unsurpassable as Humperdinck's immortal tykes, and Herbert von Karajan's warm and glowing conducting provides a depressing reminder of what a chilling, arrogant wretch that once superlative musician became. December 08, 1999: Jim Svejda's review reminds me of the days when I lived in Los Angeles and could hear his shows on almost a daily basis. It's good to see that he hasn't lost his way with words, his wicked wit, and his admiration for Herbert von Karajan. About the recording -- of course it's one of the all-time classics, and it's nice to see it back. Molto grazie, ma non troppo.
