September 28, 2009: Whereas the rest of the housing market still is lagging behind, Willie Nile provides hope for the future with his latest offering. The uninformed might think by the title this would be an offering of shredding guitar solos and complex fretwork, however what is captured is the latest, and perhaps best, in this storyteller's library of tales. I must admit that I am still stricken with the seminal Streets of New York, but this gem offers more then enough reasons to revisit it again and again.

The title track leads off with strength and a whimsical set of lyrics regarding some of Willie's fellow guitar players. I kept thinking about Rock and Roll heaven and what a great band must show up for jam sessions every now and then. Willie's voice still remains Dylanesque, however the strength and range does not reveal the years on this model.

Willie is more than a competent guitarist, but his real strength is spinning and delivery of the tale. I can't help but think of Ian Hunter's continuing talent to get to the heart of matters. Willie offers some memorable cuts, including the humorous "Doomsday Dance" about boogying right through the apocalypse, and the moving "Little Light". He offers a poignant reminder of the toll of war in "Now That the War is Over" beyond the obvious casualties and human cost.

I marvel at the strength of the songwriting, lyrics and solid playing across the entire recording. There are no throw away tracks, just a diverse range of emotions and topics that on any given day will make you say, "That captures how I feel", in a way that is both inspiring and satisfying.

Sometimes we face the reality of artists playing past their prime, but in spite of the fact Willie first came on the scene in the 80's he appears like he is just hitting his stride. He provides a consummate blend of youthful exuberance coupled with the sage experience of an older soul. Bottom-line, Willie knows how to pen and perform a solid song that leaves you wanting more.

April 10, 2009: Willie Nile is a terrific songwriter and performer, who has never made a bad record. This may be his best yet - the songs, both all-out rockers and heartfelt ballads, are great, and they are performed with real passion. The musicians are top-notch, as is the production. Listen to this one from beginning to end, it's an emotional ride. Highly recommended!
