About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Getting back to your roots can mean different things to different people, as borne out by the major-label debut from this Las Vegas quartet, which takes its cues not from bare-bones garage-rock and R&B but from the go-for-baroque grandiosity of new wave forefathers like the Cure and the Smiths. The band are at their best when singer Brandon Flowers -- who's possessed of one of those unschooled yelps that draws listeners in with dog-whistle intensity -- cuts loose and wails unabashedly, as he does on the pulsing "Somebody Told Me." The Killers manage to keep one foot in anthemic chiming-guitar territory, marching along with near-U2 fervor on "All the Things That I've Done," and the other in the more shadowy realm of synth snakiness, as on the icy "On Top." Flowers is shamelessly decadent in his tastes -- not all that surprising, given a Sin City upbringing -- but also has a knack for exploring a debauched form of sentimentality, which he does on the post-breakup paean "Mr. Brightside." While the band make no claims to wheel reinvention -- they happily admit to copping their name from a New Order video -- there's little doubt that they're sincere in re-creating a vibe that's surprisingly fresh after all these years. August 29, 2009: As is often the case with a new CD, I didn't quite care for it at first. As I listened to it a few times, I soon came to love the CD finding the music and performance of The Killers here excellant and I play it daily now as I drive to and from College classes. The variety of music is appealing. Songs that are pensive in nature with much beauty as well as more explosive sounds that are danceable and energy driven. I recommend the CD Hot Fuss. dwp / kcmo
