About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

It is no wonder that mandolinist David Grisman came up with the name "Dawg Music" to describe his style of playing, which draws from bluegrass, jazz, and many other forms of music. This 1978 recording has long been a favorite of Grisman's fans, as all of the compositions and performances have stood the test of time. Grisman's lively "Dawg's Bull" and guitarist Tony Rice's upbeat "Devlin'" set a high standard at the opening of the album, yet the remaining tracks continue to meet the high watermark of the first two songs. In addition to Rice's presence throughout the recording, Grisman utilizes five different bassists (only one song, "Dawgology," features two of them together), violinist Darol Anger, mandolinist Mike Marshall, and on two selections, the jazz violin master Stéphane Grappelli. It seems almost criminal that this valuable recording has been allowed to lapse from print, but it is a safe bet that Grisman will reissue it on his own Acoustic Disc label if he can ever obtain the rights to it on reasonable terms. one of the Best Dawg-gone Albums I've ever purchased.by Wallacabayka

October 15, 2009: Grisman's signature "Dawg" music is some of the most creative and original music I've ever come across, and This album is no exception. Now HERE is an all-star cast of musicians who blend wonderfully together. Each song is carefully laid out to brightly paint the melody while squeezing amazing solos out of each player - though it flows so naturally one could hardly call it 'squeezing'. I had fun trying to figure out if it was Jazz or bluegrass. It's probably both - and thats's a good thing. This is an excellent mixture of songs - covers and originals - that can be enjoyed anytime/anywhere. You won't regret buying it. :)

August 17, 2001: David Grisman has been the leading exponent of acoustic music for a lot of years and his is a musical genius that is to be admired. This album represents the sound of the early D.G. Quintet. The music sounds like anything alse at that time. All the musicians on this CD did a great job. I would highlight Tony Rice's guitar and Darol Anger's violin. The legendary Stephane Grapelli provides some real hot playing on two of the tunes. So, what can I add to that? Great record that any music lover should listen to.
