About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Fans of the Dixie Chicks' blockbuster albums Wide Open Spaces and Fly, prepare to be whisked to new places by Home. The title is a model of truth in advertising: Pre-megastardom, the Chicks rooted their sound in acoustic music -- bluegrass, traditional country, and folk -- and that's what their first album in three years delivers. But that's only half the story. The big news on '99's Fly was Natalie Maines and her booming voice, blues-based on big ballads and triumphant on up-tempo songs. She boasts some equally great performances here, notably a taut, beautifully rendered treatment of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" -- with its message of self-empowerment it could be read as a statement of purpose by the Chicks, whose recent label dispute seems to have energized and refined their singular musical vision. But Maines also cedes to some captivating ensemble singing on tunes such as the riveting "Travelin' Soldier," Bruce Robison's tale of love between a soldier and the girl he left behind, fleshed out by a compelling fiddles-guitar-snare drum arrangement and Maines's startling vocal solo. And that's what's so sweet about this Home. It's got the songs -- by Robison, Patty Griffin, Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott (the hit single "Long Time Gone," a sharp, wry barb aimed at country radio's restrictive programming tactics: "They got money but they don't have Cash"), and the Chicks themselves, among others -- and a warm, distinctly non-rock production from Lloyd Maines, which all adds up to an absolute winner. Home sounds great now, in the glow of the resurgence of all things acoustic and bluegrass. But it's only going to improve with age. Kinda like the ever-evolving Chicks themselves. September 27, 2010: I have been a fan of the Dixie Chicks since the beginning and I eagerly awaited the release of their newest album. I was not disappointed. This CD is great. The first single "Long Time Gone" is classic Dixie Chicks with the tongue-in-cheek lyrics and Natalie Maines' awesome voice. And the remake of "Landslide" has been bringing the Chicks deserved crossover success. I never thought it would be possible for someone to remake the song because of Fleetwood Mac's original and Stevie Nicks' voice. But the Dixie Chicks more than do justice to this classic. But my favorite tracks on the CD are probably "Truth No. 2" and "Travelin' Soldier." I love the combination of all three voices on these songs. For sheer laughs "White Trash Wedding" is another great track among many. Their fans will definitely not be disappointed with the long wait for this CD and new fans will discover why they have been so popular after their first two albums.

September 27, 2010: When I found out that the Dixie Chicks were finally going to have a new album I was excited. When I bought the CD today and listened to it I was enthralled. It was absolutly amazing. When I listened to ''Travelin' Soldier'' I cried. This album is one that you can listen to over and over and not get tired of it. Congratulations to the Chicks for hitting a home run and releasing a wonderful album.
