Editorial Reviews

Pop diva Mariah Carey doesn't have the patent on heroes. Here is a young German man -- with a voice only slightly lower than Mariah's -- offering tribute to the heroic figures from operas by Handel, Gluck, and Mozart. Andreas Scholl's achingly pure sound is in the tradition of Alfred Deller, the great British father of the countertenor revival. Deller's voice was drenched in a Callas-like sadness, while Scholl's has a gleaming quality. However forlorn the aria, like the lament for a lost love in Gluck's "Orfeo," the singer is triumphant, conquering all technical and musical challenges. Scholl's effortless elegance makes him the Fred Astaire of countertenors, and that's plenty heroic. Benjamin Ivry, Barnes & Noble
