If you doubted, even for an instant, the extravagant praise that followed Ray Charles' death in 2004, listen to this collection and put all doubts aside -- yes, Charles really was all that. American music has had its share of vocal geniuses, but only Charles was so comfortable and convincing in the many genres he took on. On this well-chosen set, gleaned from the peak years of Charles' momentous career, we hear him digging into country ("Busted," "I Can't Stop Loving You"), Latin jazz ("Unchain My Heart"), pop standards ("Over the Rainbow," "Georgia on My Mind"), and R&B ("What'd I Say," here in a rousing live version), turning everything into -- for lack of a better term -- pure Ray Charles music. While not as comprehensive as other Charles compilations, the amazingly low-priced Here We Go Again offers an excellent, wallet-friendly introduction to a true national icon.
