Divas on the order of Wynonna make pretenders of all the wannabes in the field. Paired with its DVD companion, Her Story is a scintillating double-disc overview of her life and career. Disc 1, Harmony & History, covers her work with the Judds as well as the beginnings of her solo career. It ranges from 1985's saucy "Girls Night Out" to a magnificent, soaring pop rendition of the Judds' signature (and farewell) song, 1990's "Love Can Build a Bridge" and includes a sampling of solo gems, such as the slinky love story "She Is His Only Need" and the irresistible country rocker "Tell Me Why." Disc 2, Motherhood & Music, is about the inner Wy -- the one who can funk it up on an Earth, Wind & Fire cover ("Shining Star"), affect a wispy timbre for a pop-funk treatment of Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," and growl her way through a guitar-heavy take on Melissa Etheridge's "I'm the Only One." All of Wynonna's strengths come dramatically to the fore on a deep gospel reading of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," during which the star allows her formidable backup singers to take the exuberant crowd to church with emotive solo turns of their own. She ties the songs together with autobiographical anecdotes -- hence the album's subtitle, Scenes from a Lifetime -- but in the end it's about the music, which betrays an impressive stylistic palette. Perhaps as a glimpse of things yet to come, a bonus studio track, "Attitude," co-written by Wy with Big & Rich's John Rich, is a rock 'n' soul juggernaut, featuring a shouting chorus, screaming guitars, and thundering percussion around her snarling, gutsy vocal -- a real tour de force of blue-eyed soul from the distaff side. Powerful stuff here, from a country giant at the top of her game. David McGee, Barnes & Noble
