On their fifth recording, and their first in four years, the Beastie Boys get back to an old-school hip-hop vibe without repudiating the vast array of styles they've already Beastie-ized. Thus Hello Nasty is a rarity, where old-school style sounds neither antiquated nor kitschy; instead, it is downright au courant, due to the wide range of styles covered. The sweet, acoustic "Picture This" features slightly dreamy vocals by Brooke Williams, while MCA's take on singer/songwriterdom, "I Don't Know," is highlighted by Miho Hatori's vocals and Jane Scarpantoni's cello. "And Me" sounds almost trippy, and the boys jump into their jazz-funk mode on "Song for Junior." Still, all this diversity can't detract from the raucous party vibe of "Super Disco Breakin'," "Intergallactic," and "Body Movin" (which in true Beastie style name checks the delicious French wine Chateauneuf du Pape). If you were in any doubt, Hello Nasty is a reminder that a Beasties party will still check your head. Martin Johnson, Barnes & Noble
