Editorial Reviews

In retrospect, the monster success of "Stay (I Missed You)" did Lisa Loeb no favors, much as Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry" eventually must have become something of a burden for Aimee Mann. The comparison is apt, both because Hello Lisa recalls the poppy but low-key folk-rock that's long been Mann's stock-in-trade and because its release was marred by the same kind of record company politics that stalled Mann's career for years: Hello Lisa is actually a revamped version of the earlier A&M release Cake and Pie, which had been dumped unceremoniously on the market earlier in 2002. Releasing herself from her contract, Loeb signed with the friendlier Artemis Records, replaced a few of Cake and Pie's weaker tracks with better new material -- including an excellent acoustic reworking of the extremely Mann-like single "What Am I Supposed to Say" -- and reissued the album in a more attractive new cover. Other highlights include the snarky teenage romance tune "You Don't Know Me" and the catchy power ballad "Underdog." ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide All Music Guide

November 13, 2007: if you already have Cake and Pie you will notice that this album looks very similar to that one. the difference is the subtraction of four songs and the addition of three new ones, "did that," "what am i supposed to say?," and "take me back." as the reviewer before me mentioned, the three new songs are outstanding and actually make this new album worth it. personally i don't get the whole hello kitty thing. i think it's a little cheesy. but the music is spectacular. if you already own Cake and Pie and don't want to buy a whole new album, she does sell the "Underdog" EP at lisaloeb.com with the new three songs, and you can also just buy the tracks at digital vendors.

August 19, 2007: When I first looked into this album, I was a bit confused. Why does she have two albums with identical track listings? As life went on, I bought both of them and...wow. Cake and Pie is a very strong album, but the bonus tracks that come on Hello Lisa are totally worth it. "Did That" has become a favorite song of mine and I can't imagine why it didn't make the cut for the first album. So, even if you have Cake and Pie, this album is still worth the purchase.
