About Richie Malone

    Editorial Reviews

Ever since Wes Montgomery recorded with strings in the early 1960s, mainstream jazz guitarists have stood in line to get their turn with a lush orchestra. “Heart Strings” gives Russell Malone his chance. After high-profile gigs with the likes of Jimmy Smith, Harry Connick Jr., and Diana Krall, Malone has been striking out on his own; “Heartstrings” is his third and most satisfying solo recording. As befits a traditional “with strings” project, ballads make up the main fare of the album. Malone wraps his sumptuous, warm-toned approach around such lovely material as “How About Me,” “The Bad and the Beautiful,” “A Handful of Stars” and a reading of the Gospel classic “What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Malone never lets things get sleepy; his rhythmic sense and tone have a bite that keeps all the material edgy, no matter how leisurely the tempo. The guitarist has already shown with earlier projects how hard he can swing; with Heartstrings Malone exhibits a more tender, yet still gripping, side of his substantial talent.
