July 17, 2003: Peter Ostroushko is the heartbeat behind this truly inspiring music. He is a gifted, soulful genius. "Heart of the Heartland" should be declared a national treasure. The title cut was my first glimpse at Peter's heartland. And if you are a fan of PBS, then you, too, have heard Peter's music, and probably marveled out loud and wondered "What is that sweet tune they're playing?" This CD is a collection of musical vignettes. The images conjured up by his mandolin and fiddle are as vivid as a “Montana” sunset, or a “Prairie Sunrise”. You’ve never heard anything as moving and as joyfully vibrant as “Nicaragua: Prelude and Dance” or as sweet as “Sweet Betsy From Pike” and “Pioneer Waltz”. The peaceful sway of “(Twilight On) The Sangre de Cristos” fills you with that same feeling you get sittin’ on the porch on a cool evening after a long summer day filled with family and lemonade. Peter also includes a reel or two to get you stompin’ in the morning. “Heart of the Heartland” has become one of my favorite CD’s. You know -- the kind you carry around with you everywhere; the kind you grab the ears of your friends and family for, so that they can listen; the kind that touches your life and makes it just a bit better, as only really fine music can. I’ve heard the title cut from “Sacred Heart”. Hooked again, I’ve ordered this CD by Peter. I’ll give y’all a holler when I’ve heard it...
