Editorial Reviews

It's difficult to imagine the alternative music landscape of the 1980s and '90s progressing as it did without the groundwork laid by British gloom rockers Joy Division. After the suicide of frontman Ian Curtis in 1980, the remaining members regrouped as New Order and went on to forever alter the way synths are used by rock bands -- not to mention the sound of the global dance floor -- but it all started with the charged, dirgelike sounds of Joy Division. Over the course of two albums, several singles, Peel Session recordings, and live concerts, the Manchester foursome joined a punk-rock attitude with Curtis's dark, decay-obsessed lyrics and a sublime sense of melody. The result was an altogether otherworldly experience. Heart & Soul stands as the definitive document of Joy Division's brief burst of life, collecting all of their studio recordings -- which includes two albums (1979's Unknown Pleasures and 1980's Closer), landmark singles such as "Transmission" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart," and plenty of rarities and demos, such as a very raw, previously unreleased studio take of the desperate "Ceremony," which New Order later re-recorded and released as its first single -- plus a full disc of oft-bootlegged live material assembled from four different concerts. Live versions of such songs as "Dead Souls" and "Isolation," in particular, reflect the anguish and angst of the troubled Curtis, who made an appropriate antihero for the post-punk generation. The discs are housed in a trifold long box and packaged with a thick booklet featuring an extensive band history, liner notes by critic Jon Savage, a detailed discography, song lyrics, and lots of photos and video stills. Serious fans will certainly relish the chance to fill in any gaps in their collections, while relative newcomers will be astonished by the profound sadness and beauty Joy Division created during its short but potent career. December 12, 2002: This box set contains almost all of the music recorded by Joy Division between 1978 and 1980, and certainly all of the most essential works of the best rock group ever to walk the planet (in my opinion)contained within 2 cd's of a 4 cd set. In addition to which you get a bonus CD of previously officially unreleased radio sessions, and two embryonic versions of "Ceremony" and "In A Lonely Place". A further cd of live performances is also included. This box set acts as closure to the long time fans who've picked up everything else, but crucially also as an introduction to those for whom Joy Division remain to be discovered.
