About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

A sophisticated showcase for his varied jazz styles, Jeff Lorber's He Had a Hat finds the pianist moving from softly funky pop-jazz numbers to a few straight-ahead swingers. Always an urbane and tasteful musician, Lorber has often found a good balance between contemporary pop oriented material and more cerebral improvisational cuts, and He Had a Hat is a prime example of this duality. To these ends, tracks like the title cut and the frenetic "Surreptitious" evince a kind of Tower of Power meets Brecker Brothers funk. Fittingly, trumpeter Randy Brecker adds his supple chops to the latter track. Similarly engaging big-band numbers like "All Most Blues" and the afterglow ballad "Orchid" bring to mind both early- and late-period Miles Davis, respectively. Also joining Lorber here are a bevy of name artists including trumpeter Chris Botti, vocalist Paula Cole, saxophonist Gerald Albright, and many others. This CD was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. June 12, 2007: One of the most influential jazz/fusion pioneers (besides Miles Davis of course) returns with stunning album. "He Had A Hat" is Jeff Lorber's finest CD to date. Lorber has combined big band and swing elements, with the contemporary vocal stylings of Eric Benet and Jeff's own fusion signature sound creating almost a new genre. I like to call it Lounge/Fusion

April 19, 2007: HE HAD A HAT is an incredibly original, entertainingly diverse, cohesive body of music. On 13 tracks, styles range from contemporary jazz to hard bop and plenty of Lorbers signature funky fusion vibe. The All Star lineup bring their best playing game to the project. Featured vocalist Eric Benet sings the 1971 Bill Withers classic GRANDMAS HANDS. Paula Cole duets with Benet on her original song THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HEART written with Lorber for the album. Powerhouse horn ensembles are arranged by the masterful Tom Scott. Lorber himself takes a turn at arranging for a horn section on SUPER FUSION UNIT. World famous orchestrator Jeremy Lubbock fills out the lush sound experience on ANTHEM FOR A NEW AMERICA. With Tom Scotts killer horn arrangements ALL MOST BLUES harkens back to jazz of the early 60s reflecting a Miles Davis mood. Lorber indulges in some BC BOP inspired by the chord changes of Charlie Parkers Confirmation. Featuring Randy Breckers hot trumpet, SURREPTITIOUS shows off that tight horn section and Lorbers incredible keyboards, pulling off a cool Herbie Hancock vibe. On ORCHID, Chris Botti composed and creates a compelling mood performing on trumpet. The CD features Lorbers best playing ever it is free, open, inventive, expressive, adventurous, unencumbered, and soulful. Everything was recorded live with very organic instruments, not very much synthesis at all. Harmony is awesome throughout - it is evident that much focus has been placed on all things harmony! Something very special is happening here. Can you say Grammy ?!
