About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Vocalist Mavis Staples was embedded in the sound of the '60s gospel-pop group the Staple Singers, led by her father, Pops Staples. Though she made good albums for Stax in the '60s and, more recently, CDs under the wing of Prince, Staples has not gotten the recognition she deserves. Today you can find her on tribute CDs -- Johnny's Blues: A Tribute to Johnny Cash and Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan(on which she sings a duet with Dylan) -- and soundtracks. But it is Staples' debut on Alligator Records, Have a Little Faith, that presents the totality of the singer. While nothing strays far from the leanness and consciousness-raising songs of the Staple Singers, Mavis makes each song her own by effortlessly pouring her whole talent into every note. She is bluesy, more uptown than Koko Taylor but rootsier than Etta James, on “I Still Believe in You”; a pop diva on the song that tells her dad’s story, “Pop’s Recipe”; and quite countrified on “The End of the Day.” Standouts are Staples’ funked-up acoustic versions of two traditional tunes, “One Kind Favor” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Have a Little Faith brings Staples into the present with its fine production qualities and her for-all-times talent. Hopefully, a lot of people will be listening. Roberta Penn, Barnes & Noble

April 18, 2006: I had the opportunity to hear Mavis Staples on satellite recording at Ground Zero Nightclub(Morgan Freeman's Club) in Clarksdale, MS on the show entitled "Divas". The last time I heard from them was at the Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans, LA. After the Katring Hurricane we needed to hear some soul stirring revival to revive our souls and help us to continue to be strong throughout all our struggles with damages to our homes and jobs and family dislocating. The songs uplifted my spirit to the point where I had to find Have a little faith the CD to purchase. I found it at Barnes and Noble.I was at Ground Zero June 2005.
