About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Based on the title alone, it's easy enough to think that Have Guitar, Will Travel is nothing but raging six-strings, but this record is wild in a whole different way: it's the sound of Joe Perry cutting loose in his home studio, trying anything that comes into his mind. Perry pulled this together in the summer of 2009 after his Aerosmith obligations fell apart, and Have Guitar reflects its quick creation, filled with loose ends and tossed-off rockers, and standing in direct contrast to Perry's overly mannered, highly polished 2005 album. This is under-produced, almost defiantly so, sometimes still bearing the echoes of the click tracks, other times sounding greasy and raw, but that raggedness is considerably charming, as it gives this a warmth that latter-day Aerosmith albums have often lacked. It's good to hear Perry tear it up again -- with any luck, he can bring some of this energy to the next 'Smith project, and if not, he can always head into his studio and cut another raver like this. November 09, 2009: The persistent rock and roller attitude of Joe Perry shines through with "Have Guitar, Will Travel." Joe takes no prisoners as this album, recorded in only 47 days and produced by the man himself, launches through every dimension of both blues and rock n' roll. Songs such as the first single, "We've Got A Long Way to Go" and another surefire staple-"Do You Wonder" showcase the voice of new German talent Hagen. Meanwhile, pieces such as "Freedom" and "Wooden Ships" set the backdrop for Joe to do exactly what he does best and show off his killer guitar work. Each and every song provokes yet another emotion as Joe tells his story as all the greats do - through music. This album is a complete home-run and I appreciate Joe's ability to convey exactly what he is attempting to in this album.

November 04, 2009: Have Guitar Will Travel, the name alone lets us know that this living legend is in it for the long haul. Pure an simple, this is straight rock and roll. Perry switches off vocal duties with Hagan, who is a german singer that Perry found online. The title track "We've Got A Long Way To Go" is a mix of old and new rock. It is definitely the single of the record. Then kicks right into "slingshot" giving up a fuzzy-riff of blues and rock.

Joe's riffs are the same aerosmith sound we have grown to love. The difference is Joe is free to do what he wants without an constrains. The song "Wooden Ships" is an instrumental piece that shows fine musicianship and does not come across as show off song.

A key song on the record is "Heaven and Hell". We all know that Perry is known for being an epic songwriter but this is where is shines. It has haunting guitar licks and deep lyrics that appear all over the album (also on "Oh Lord (21 Grams)" a acoustic pipe organ piece) to help kick the devil out.

The album closes with familiar early aerosmith sounding tracks. "Freedom" and "Scare the Cat" is for old and new fans to listen and rock.

"Have Guitar Will Travel" is a stellar release from Joe and we hope to hear more from him soon.
