About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Who better than composer John Williams, who scored Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone, to wave his magical baton and conjure the mystery and excitement engendered by Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, the second film adaptation in J. K. Rowling's beloved series? After all, Williams has been nominated for an unprecedented 471 Academy Awards, for music that includes the scores for such enchanting films as Star Wars, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The excitement begins right off the bat with "Prologue: Book II and the Escape from the Dursleys," an invitation into the enchanted world that commences with a delicate theme stated by chimes, which are soon joined by a swirl of violins punctuated by escalating brass. Recurring chimes, in fact, prove their charm throughout the disc, even as the accelerating tempo of violins and brass signal something bigger is afoot, serving as a kind of magical parentheses to the proceedings. A cheery melody carried by strings makes for a soaring passage in "Fawkes the Phoenix," again sprinkled with chimes. The score is all top-drawer Williams, from "Gilderoy Lockhart," a witty section in which the violins and oboes engage in playful counterpoint, to "The Spiders," in which flitting masses of violins and percussion conjure masses of arachnids on the loose. By the finale, "Harry's Wonderful World," which draws on the majesty of a full orchestra, this richly orchestrated score proves again that for conjuring spooky, adventurous fun with a childlike sense of wonder, there's no one quite like the magical Mr. Williams. July 29, 2004: Easily one of John Williams's best film franchises, he continues his Harry Potter repertoire in the score from the second film. It's obvious Williams knows exactly what he's doing when writing for sequels, it swells and decrescendos at all the right spots, stays interesting and enchanting, and contains some of the most haunting and stunning score pieces in recent film history. The Chamber of Secrets track is dramatic and intense, illustrating the themes presented in the film's climax, Dobby the House Elf is a brilliant piece of musical complexity, and Fawkes the Phoenix is perhaps the most stunningly beautiful piece in the entire Harry Potter score saga. If you haven't already, purchase this CD. It's a brilliant addition to any Harry Potter or John Williams fan. You will not be disappointed.
